Verse 1

When all the world
Seems to pierce my soul
And fear and doubt they take control
Your tenderness it pulls me through
Your healing touch it makes me new

Chorus

Even when I fall on shaky ground my heart will sing
Even when my strength it can’t be found my heart will sing
My heart will sing it is well
It is well with my soul

Verse 2

When all I’ve fought for
Begins to break apart
And storms keep pounding on my heart
Your voice it calms my trembling
Your steady love reminding me

Chorus

Even when I fall on shaky ground my heart will sing
Even when my strength it can’t be found my heart will sing
My heart will sing it is well
It is well with my soul
With my soul

Bridge

You’re the anchor (you’re the anchor)
In my trial (In my trial)
You’re the peace that lasts a while
When my faith is wearing thin
You’ll breathe your life in me again

Chorus

Even when I fall on shaky ground my heart will sing
Even when my strength it can’t be found my heart will sing
My heart will sing it is well
It is well with my soul

Meaning & Inspiration

Shaky Ground is a song about singing through fear and weakness. The first verse says that when the world seems to pierce the soul and fear and doubt take control, God's tenderness pulls through and His healing touch makes new. The chorus states that even when falling on shaky ground or when strength cannot be found, the heart will sing "It is well with my soul."

The second verse speaks of losing what was fought for and storms pounding, but His voice calms trembling and His steady love reminds. The bridge names Him the anchor in the trial and the peace that lasts, who breathes life again when faith is thin. The refrain draws on the hymn line about it being well with the soul, with Psalm 46:1-2, Hebrews 6:19, Isaiah 26:3 and Mark 4:39 for peace and the anchor. The repeated chorus makes it a song of comfort.
