Meaning & Inspiration
“How Much We Can Bear” by Hezekiah Walker is a short song of comfort for hard moments. The first verse speaks to someone going through something and not knowing what to do, and says to call on Jesus, who will see them through, “for He knows.” The second verse does the same for a trial that has come, saying to call on Jesus because He will make a way.
The key line is “Jesus, He knows how much we can bear.” That idea is close to 1 Corinthians 10:13, which says God will not let believers be tested beyond what they can bear, and to Psalm 103:14, which says He knows how we are formed.
The vamp is written for parts, with all voices, then sopranos and tenors, taking turns on the words “how much we can bear.” This gives the song a layered, choir feel. The overall message is trust in Jesus, who knows the limit of every burden and will help.
