Meaning & Inspiration

I’m sitting here with the static of the world still ringing in my ears—all the noise I let in, all the garbage I convinced myself was truth just to keep from looking at the mirror. When Diana Hamilton sings, “Every other voice soso yeye / It’s an opinion, they can have it,” it hits me like a bucket of ice water.

We spend so much time listening to the cacophony of the pig pen. I’ve traded my life’s peace for the opinions of ghosts and strangers. I’ve leaned into the "long things"—the explanations, the justifications, the half-truths I told myself to excuse why I was running in the opposite direction of home.

But there’s no debate with God. There’s no negotiation when the Father finally speaks.

“Just His word, No long thing.”

That line is brutal, honestly. It strips away all my excuses. I spent years telling myself that if I could just figure out the right theological framework, or if I could just wait until I felt "ready," then I could come back. But the prodigal doesn't come back when he’s ready. He comes back when he’s starving. And when you’re starving, you don’t need a sermon. You need the bread. You need the Word that creates out of nothing.

When Hamilton says, “The dead will rise when you speak life,” it’s not some abstract promise for a Sunday morning. It’s what happens when you’re dead in your own mess and He calls your name. It’s the smell of the grave clothes falling off. I remember the weight of the dirt—the dirt I lived in, the dirt I dragged home with me. I didn't deserve to hear Him speak. I deserved a rebuke, or at best, silence. But He spoke.

I’m still scrubbing the soot off my hands. I’m still learning to shut out the other voices—the ones that tell me I’m still the person who left, the ones that remind me of every wrong turn.

“Awurade kasa, oh kasa na wo deɛ na yɛ tie.” Lord, speak, for it is You we listen to.

It’s hard to trust, though. My ears are so used to the roar of my own rebellion that His voice feels thin sometimes. But that’s the point, isn't it? “W’asɛm yɛ nkwaa.” His word is life. It doesn't need to be loud to be final. It just needs to be His.

I’m still here, still a bit broken, still smelling like the fire I barely escaped. But for once, I’m not trying to add my own sentences to the end of His. I’m just waiting for the next word. Because if He says I’m His, then that’s the end of the argument. Everything else is just noise.
