Meaning & Inspiration
I was sitting here listening to Benjamin Dube sing "Jehovah is Your Name" from his 2013 album In His Presence, and it’s strange how something so simple just sits in your chest for a while. The whole thing keeps coming back to this idea of God as a "mighty warrior, great in battle." It took me back to Exodus 15 where Moses and the people are singing after the Red Sea, calling Him a man of war. It’s a jarring image, honestly, especially when we’re so used to hearing about God as a Shepherd or a Father, but it’s real. It’s grounded in that ancient grit where the people actually saw Him fight on their behalf.
I’m sitting here thinking about that, though—is that how I really see Him day-to-day? It feels like the song is trying to strip away all the soft edges we put on God. When you call Him Jehovah, you’re calling Him by the name He gave Moses at the burning bush—that I AM. It’s heavy because it suggests an authority that doesn't ask for permission. But sometimes I wonder if we use these titles to make ourselves feel safe, like having a giant on our side, instead of actually grappling with the fact that if He’s a warrior, there’s a war going on that I’m often ignoring. It’s not just a comforting chant. It’s an acknowledgment of power that leaves very little room for me to be in control. I don't know if I'm fully comfortable with that, but then again, looking at the history of the Israelites, comfort wasn't usually the point when He showed up as their warrior. I keep wondering if I’m just singing the words or if I’m actually leaning into the weight of what it means to be on the side of a God who battles.
