Evie, born Evelyn Tornquist on March 29, 1956, in Rahway, New Jersey, to Norwegian immigrant parents, is a contemporary Christian music singer who rose to prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She began her singing career as a teenager while visiting Norway and released her English-language debut album in 1972.
Evie’s recordings earned widespread recognition. Her albums Gentle Moments (1978) made her the first gospel artist to achieve a gold album in Australia. Three of her albums—Mirror (1978), Come On, Ring Those Bells (1979), and Never the Same (1980)—received Grammy Award nominations for Best Contemporary Gospel Performance. Among her well-known songs from this period are “Mirror,” “Step into the Sunshine,” “Four Foot Eleven,” and “Come On, Ring Those Bells.” She was awarded the Dove Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in both 1977 and 1978.
In 1979, Evie married Swedish pastor and musician Pelle Karlsson. The following year, she retired from full-time performing in 1981 to pursue other avenues of ministry. Her influence continued through mentorship; she later worked with Christian musician Rebecca St. James on a series of events focused on biblical principles.
Evie’s contributions to gospel music were honored with her induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2005, and she also served as an inaugural inductee to the Christian Music Hall of Fame.
