Lyrics

When we speak Your name Something happens in the room Our hands go up We can’t wait to see what You’re gonna do

When we speak Your name Power is released As we bow down before You Every demon has to flee

(Before we do anything else) Yeah (We call on You) We call on You yeah (Before we do anything else) We call on You

We call on Jesus show up (Show up, show out Jesus) Move how You wanna move (Move how You wanna move Jesus) And You can do what You wanna do (do what You wanna do) Oooh what You wanna do

We call on Jesus show up (Show up, show out Jesus) Move how You wanna move (Move how You wanna move Jesus) You can do what You wanna do (do what You wanna do) Oooh (what You wanna do) yeah

Meaning & Inspiration

There is a peculiar tension in Anthony Brown’s writing here, specifically in the line: "You can do what You wanna do."

On the surface, it sounds like an act of high-level surrender. It’s the kind of phrase we toss around in church pews to signal that we are no longer trying to strong-arm the Almighty into fulfilling our personal wish lists. We are clearing the floor. We are bowing. We are saying, "The script is Yours." It’s meant to be humble, right?

But look closer at the phrasing. Is it actually surrender, or is it a dare?

When we repeat, "You can do what You wanna do," we aren’t just observing God’s sovereignty; we are effectively inviting Him into a space that we have already designated as a "room." When Brown sings, "Something happens in the room," the theology shifts from the infinite, omnipresent God of the universe to a God whose presence is being summoned, almost curated, by our actions.

There is a strange, jarring friction between the human desire for a miracle and the actual cost of God having His way. If He truly does what He "wants" to do, does that always align with the "lifting of hands" in the middle of a bad situation?

Scripture has a habit of complicating this. Think of Gethsemane—the ultimate "do what You want" moment. Jesus didn’t sing this with a rhythm section. He sweated blood. He was effectively saying, "If this cup can pass, let it, but if Your will is my death, then I’ll take it." When we sing this in a church service, we often use it as a catalyst for a breakthrough. We use it to trigger a "show up" moment. It’s as if we are saying, "If I surrender my agenda, You owe me a manifestation."

The poetry here walks a tightrope. Is it a revelation of God’s lordship, or is it a strategic bargaining chip?

I find myself bothered by the repetition of "Show up, show out." It treats the divine like an arrival we are expecting to witness, like a performer stepping onto a stage. But God isn't usually in the business of "showing out" for our entertainment. His movements are often quiet, stubborn, and excruciatingly slow—the exact opposite of the urgency Brown’s lyrics project.

Yet, there is something honest about the panic behind the plea. We want a way made. We want a healing. We want the demons to flee. And we realize, perhaps in the final chorus, that we don't actually know how to get there on our own.

Maybe the "do what You wanna do" isn't a theological statement at all. Maybe it’s just the white flag of someone who has run out of options. We call on Him because the room feels empty, and we are desperate for the furniture to move. It’s unfinished, messy, and maybe a little bit selfish, but in the heat of a crisis, it’s the only prayer that seems to stick.
