Meaning & Inspiration
Great Are You Lord is a worship song that praises God as giver of life and hope. The verse says He gives life, is love, brings light to the darkness, gives hope and restores every broken heart, and the line Great are You, Lord answers each statement. The chorus says that because the breath in the lungs is His, praise is poured out to Him only.
The bridge looks to all the earth shouting His praise, hearts crying out and bones singing. The themes follow Psalm 145:3 and Psalm 48:1 on God being great, Genesis 2:7 and Job 33:4 on the breath of life, Psalm 147:3 on healing the brokenhearted, Psalm 150:6 on everything with breath praising the Lord, and Ezekiel 37 on bones that sing. The short repeated phrases and building bridge make the song an easy, rising declaration for a congregation.
