Verse 1

We are under an open heaven
Where His glory shall be revealed
Where the sin, sick all shall heal
We are under an open heaven

Verse 2

We are under an open heaven
Where His power shall overflow
Where the broken shall be made whole
We are under an open heaven

Chorus (x2)

We are under an open heaven
(oh we are under an open)

Ad-lib

We are under an open heaven
(pour out your power on us)
We are under an open heaven
(oh pour it out)
We are under an open heaven
(rain on your people we are)
We are under an open heaven
(Oh rain on us)
We are under an open heaven
(we need your power oh God)
We are under an open heaven

We are under an open heaven

We are under an open heaven

Meaning & Inspiration

“Open Heaven” by Maranda Curtis is a congregational declaration built on one line, “We are under an open heaven.” The verses say what an open heaven means: God’s glory revealed, the sick healed, His power overflowing, and the broken made whole. The picture is close to Malachi 3:10, where the windows of heaven are opened, and to Mark 1:10, where heaven is opened at the baptism of Jesus.

Between the repetitions, the lead voice adds short prayers: “pour out your power on us,” “rain on your people,” “cover us, God,” and “show us, dear Lord.” These turn the declaration into a request, so the song moves between stating that heaven is open and asking God to fill the space with His presence.

The ending quotes Psalm 16:11 in its own words, “In your presence there is fullness of joy,” and returns to “open, open heaven.” The song is meant to be sung over and over, and its message is expectation that God’s glory and healing are available to His gathered people.
