Lyrics

I care not today what the morrow may bring,

If shadow or sunshine or rain,

The Lord I know ruleth o’er everything,

And all of my worry is vain.

Refrain

Living by faith, in Jesus above,

Trusting confiding in his great love;

From all harm safe in his sheltering arm,

I’m living by faith and feel no alarm.

Though tempests may blow and the storm-clouds arise,

Obscuring the brightness of life,

I’m never alarmed at the overcast skies,

The Master looks on at the strife.

I know that he safely will carry me through,

No matter what evils betide,

Why should I then care, though the tempest may blow,

If Jesus walks close to my side.

Our Lord will return to this earth some sweet day,

Our troubles will then all be o’er,

The Master so gently will lead us away,

Beyond that blest heavenly shore.

Meaning & Inspiration

“Living by Faith” presents trust in Christ as the answer to uncertainty, changing weather, conflict, and fear. The singer refuses to let tomorrow’s shadows govern the present because the Lord rules over every circumstance. Its refrain gathers that confidence into a simple confession: safety rests in Jesus’ love and shelter, not in an absence of trouble.

The later verses deepen the hymn’s hope. Storm clouds still rise, yet Christ remains near and able to carry the believer through. The closing vision of the Lord’s return places present anxiety beside the promise of eternal rest. This language closely echoes Proverbs 3:5–6, where trust in the Lord replaces dependence on limited understanding, and Psalm 56:3–4, where fear is answered by confidence in God. The song therefore treats faith as steady reliance on Christ amid danger, with final hope fixed on his promised return.
