Golden Bells

Golden Bells is a name carried by multiple gospel groups rooted in the traditional quartet style. The Golden Bells of Lexington, Mississippi, are a gospel quartet that performs in a modern quartet style while retaining the character of traditional church music. Dr. Isaac Lindsey is associated with this group. Their recorded work includes the album Thank You, which features songs such as “Lay Down My Burdens” and “Work On Me.”

Separately, a group known as The Mighty Golden Bells has released gospel music, including the albums God Is a Way Maker and Waiting on the Lord. In 1972, The Mighty Golden Bells, featuring William Sanders, released a gospel funk 45 titled “Something.” These groups continue the legacy of vocal quartet harmony that has long been a staple of African American gospel music.

It is worth noting that the name “Golden Bells” also appears as the title of a 1923 hymnal compiled by Homer A. Rodeheaver and as part of the well-known gospel hymn “When They Ring the Golden Bells,” written by Daniel de Marbelle in 1887. These historical works are separate from the performing groups of the same name. The Golden Bells and The Mighty Golden Bells remain active in their own right, contributing to the ongoing tradition of gospel quartet music.
