Meaning & Inspiration
I Won't Have To Cross Jordan Alone is a gospel song of assurance for the end of life. The chorus says that Jesus died to atone for all sins, that in the darkness the singer sees Him waiting, and that the crossing of the Jordan will not be made alone. The verse pictures coming to the river at the end of the day, when the last winds of sorrow have blown, and finding somebody waiting to show the way.
The added closing verse borrows the hymn lines about a fountain filled with blood drawn from Immanuel's veins, where sinners plunged beneath the flood lose all their guilty stains. The imagery fits Joshua 3:14-17 for crossing the Jordan, Psalm 23:4, John 14:3 and Hebrews 13:5, and the fountain verse recalls Zechariah 13:1 and 1 John 1:7.
