Voices of Fire - JOY (Unspeakable) Lyrics
Lyrics
Joy, joy, joy, joy Joy, joy, joy, joy Joy, joy, joy, joy (Uh) Joy, joy, joy, joy (Yeah)
Unspeakable-speakable Don't mean it's unreachable I'll go where He leads me to More synonyms, I'm gon' need a few Lately, I've had a hard time Ain't been satisfied when I testify Wanna make sure I'm sharp when I make the point of view When them blessings come through (I'm clear then) And even though I'm clear (When you do it again) They must understand the point of view
The last word doesn't come from the doctor Who's the world that the doctor comes out of? Just keep praying beyond the last hour Now you've witnessed the procedure of power
Mumbling to myself, must think I'm crazy But I'm humbling myself and I'm giving praise Fumbling God in myself, they don't what I'm saying If you crumble and need help, I know who can raise you
Unspeakable-speakable Don't mean it's unreachable I'll go where He leads me to More synonyms, I'm gon' need a few Lately, I've had a hard time Ain't been satisfied when I testify Wanna make sure I'm sharp when I make the point of view When them blessings come through (I'm clear then) And even though I'm clear (When you do it again) They must understand the point of view
Said I couldn't change that, that's another life But I scrubbed like Ajax, I've stayed on my grind I was way (Way back), now I'm front of line Was I s'posed to say that? Ain't tryna undermine
Dark situations can make them much brighter, yeah, yeah, yeah If your spirit's weighed down, He can make them much lighter, yeah You're just takin' off, you can go higher Now let the joyful water fill your eyes up
Lately, I've had a hard time Ain't been satisfied when I testify Wanna make sure I'm sharp when I make the point of view When them blessings come through (I'm clear then) And even though I'm clear (When you do it again) They must understand the point of view
Oh, I've got (Joy) Wonderful (Joy) Great joy (Joy) Powerful (Joy) Oh, I'm talkin' 'bout (Joy) In the morning, I got joy (Joy) In the noonday, I got joy (Joy) And late in the midnight hour (Joy) I got joy When them blessings come through (When them blessings come through) When them blessings come through (When them blessings come through) When them blessings come through (When them blessings come through) Yeah (Joy) This joy that I have (Joy) World didn't give it, and the world (Joy) Can't take it away, I got it (Joy) I got it, I got it (Joy) In my walk (Joy), in my talk (Joy) In my home (Joy) or my job (Joy) Enormous joy (Joy), wonderful joy (Joy) Indescribable joy (Joy), unspeakable joy (Joy) If you want it, you can have it (Joy) If you need it, you can have it (Joy) Love, peace (Joy) Joy, joy (Joy) When them blessings come through (When them blessings come through) When them blessings come through (When them blessings come through) When them blessings come through (When them blessings come through) Come get (Joy) your joy (Joy) Thank God for joy (Joy) Thank you, God, for your joy (Joy) Power, peace (Joy) Joy (Joy, Joy) Joy (Joy) Joy

Voices of Fire - JOY (Unspeakable) (Official Audio) ft. Pharrell Williams
Meaning & Inspiration
When I’m planning a set, I often find myself staring at the divide between a song that sounds good in a studio and a song that actually holds up when you’re standing in front of a congregation on a Tuesday night. Voices of Fire and Pharrell Williams have dropped something here that feels like a conversation mid-wrestle.
There’s a line that hits me harder than the rest: "Lately, I've had a hard time / Ain't been satisfied when I testify."
Most of what we sing in the modern church feels like we’re trying to convince God—or maybe ourselves—that we’ve already arrived at the mountain top. We’re often terrified of admitting that our "testimony" feels like a struggle. But this admission is a breath of fresh air. It’s honest about the friction of the Christian life. It acknowledges that standing in front of a group of people and claiming the goodness of God is a heavy, sharp-edged thing when you’re currently walking through a "hard time." It’s a messy, human start to an act of worship.
Then there is the line: "The last word doesn't come from the doctor / Who's the world that the doctor comes out of?"
It’s a blunt, almost jarring pivot back to Sovereignty. It’s not a soft sentiment; it’s a reorientation. When we sing this, we’re forced to stop navel-gazing—to stop fumbling, as the song puts it—and look at the Author of the story. It echoes that sense in Romans 8, where we realize our present sufferings don’t hold a candle to the reality of who God is. It reminds me that worship isn't just about feeling better; it’s about recognizing that the "procedure of power" is happening in the background, whether we feel it or not.
But here is where I get stuck as a leader: The Landing.
The song builds this incredible, infectious energy. It’s full of "Joy," "Power," and "Peace." By the end, it’s a massive declaration that the world didn’t give it and can’t take it away. That’s a classic, firm place to stand. But does the congregation feel like they’ve arrived at that joy because they’ve actually processed the "hard time," or did they just dance past the pain?
If we’re not careful, we turn this into a thin shell of positivity. But if we lean into that "mumbling to myself" honesty, it becomes a weapon. It’s the sound of someone who is still fumbling with their own darkness but has decided to praise anyway because they know exactly who can raise them from the rubble. It’s an unfinished, gritty sort of faith. It doesn't leave you perfectly tied up in a bow; it leaves you holding the tension between the "hard time" and the "unspeakable joy" that somehow sits right on top of it. And honestly? That’s usually enough.
