The song is an urgent prayer to Jesus from a person who feels close to sinking. Its repeated plea for rescue gathers several burdens into one confession: persistent illness, exhaustion in ministry, unemployment, unpaid rent, and the absence of help from relatives, friends, or neighbors. The details give the prayer a concrete setting, while the refrain keeps returning to Christ as the remaining source of aid.
The image of sinking closely recalls Peter crying for the Lord to save him when fear and the waves overcame his steps. It also fits biblical descriptions of God as help in trouble and the maker from whom help comes. The lyric does not pretend that distress has already disappeared.
