Meaning & Inspiration

“Onaga – It’s Working” by Tim Godfrey and J.J. Hairston is a celebration of answered prayer set in a Nigerian worship style. The verse is a list of things happening “for my sake”: chains breaking, mountains moving, walls falling, and everything working. The repeated “aye” works as a call-and-response shout, and the chorus answers the question “Is it working?” with “It’s working.”

The imagery draws on familiar Bible pictures. Falling walls recall Jericho in Joshua 6, breaking chains recall Acts 12 and Psalm 107:14, and the line that everything is working for the singer’s good is close to Romans 8:28. The second verse widens the claim from the singer to every place: miracles, open doors, blessings, and victory “everywhere.”

The pre-chorus and bridge turn to the congregation, calling the “children of God” to shout hallelujah to the Lord Most High. The song’s tone is joyful testimony, with the focus on expecting God to act and giving thanks when He does.
