“Take Me to the King” by Tamela Mann is a prayer from someone with nothing left to offer but a torn heart. The singer is tired, weak, and hurt, with few options, and admits to being “all churched out.” Even so, the soul refuses to die, and the refrain asks only to be taken to the King and laid at the throne to gaze on His glory.
The image of a broken heart as an offering is close to Psalm 51:17, and the desire to gaze on the glory recalls Psalm 27:4. The third part moves to the people’s pain and asks for a word that pours like rain, with the line “no rules, no religion” expressing a desire to run to the Healer.
