Tamela Jean Mann was born on June 9, 1966, in Fort Worth, Texas, and was raised in a spiritual household grounded in the Church of God in Christ (COGIC). She began her professional music career as a vocalist with the gospel group Kirk Franklin and the Family, a foundation that launched her into a multifaceted career in Christian music and entertainment.

In 2005, Mann launched her solo music career with the album Gotta Keep Movin'. This was followed by The Master Plan (2009), Best Days (2012), One Way (2016), Us Against the World (2018), and Overcomer (2021). Her catalog includes the notable singles “Take Me to the King” (2012) and “God Provides” (2016). She and her husband, David Mann, founded their own record label, Tillymann Music Group.

Mann’s achievements include a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance/Song in 2017 for “God Provides,” a Stellar Award for Best Female Gospel Artist of the Year in 2014, and the Best Gospel Artist award at the 2014 BET Awards. Her album Best Days was named Billboard’s Gospel Album of the Decade for 2010–2019, and she holds the record for the most No. 1 singles on the Billboard Gospel Airplay chart.

Beyond music, Mann is a stage and film actress, best known for her recurring role as Cora Simmons in Tyler Perry productions. In 2022, she was inducted into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame.
