Meaning & Inspiration
This short song is a prayer of trust that borrows its imagery from Psalm 23. The chorus joins "Though I walk through valleys low, I'll fear no evil" with "By the waters still my soul," and answers both with the line "My heart will trust in You." The setting is a path through darkness, and the request is to be held by the hand and guided by Jesus.
The verses describe a God who is close in every mood. He is one who will "mourn with me" and "dance with me," who gives counsel and comfort, and who lights the path "When I cannot see." The claim that the singer's heart of hearts is "bound" to Him gives the trust a personal tone and keeps the text simple enough for young singers to learn.
Psalm 23:4 and Psalm 23:2 supply the valley and still waters, Proverbs 3:5-6 asks for trust with all the heart, and Psalm 119:105 calls the word of God a light for the path.
