Meaning & Inspiration

My shirt still smells like the gutter. You know that smell—a mix of stale regret, cheap wine, and the kind of darkness that clings to your skin long after you’ve crawled out. When I listen to Samsong singing "E dey work," I don't hear a prosperity lecture. I hear a man trying to convince himself—or maybe the world—that the dirt he walked through didn't have the final word.

There’s this line he hits: “A closed mouth is a closed up destiny.”

For a long time, I didn't say anything at all. I was too busy trying to hide the filth under my fingernails. In the pig pen, the only thing I could articulate was my own failure. My tongue was heavy with the taste of husks. I had convinced myself that because I’d messed up so bad, the "work" of God had stopped in my life. I thought grace was a resource that ran dry once you stepped off the porch.

But then, the Father threw his arms around me. He didn’t ask for a résumé or a list of things I’d done right. He just gave me a robe and a ring. Now, when I hear Samsong talking about "the word of God in my mouth," it doesn’t feel like some corporate slogan. It feels like the first time I realized my voice wasn't just for groveling or apologizing. It was for declaring that I belong to someone who doesn't care about the mud I tracked into the house.

Romans 10:9 says, "If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." It’s so simple it’s scandalous. The world wants you to believe your "destiny" is locked away because of your history, but that’s a lie I lived for years. Samsong’s rhythm here—it’s insistent. It’s like he’s trying to beat the doubt out of the air. E dey work. It’s working, even when you’re still shaking, even when you’re still looking over your shoulder waiting for the heavy hand of judgment to fall.

I don’t know if I’m fully "right" yet. I still have bad days where I feel like the kid who spent his inheritance on nothing. But maybe that’s the point. The "work" isn’t about me being shiny; it’s about the fact that even when my life felt like a tossed dice in a fool’s paradise, the Grace that dragged me home didn't stop moving.

It’s messy. It’s not "churchy" to be this raw about needing a win. But I need to hear it. I need to know that the Name of Jesus is still doing something in my mouth, even if that mouth still occasionally says things I regret. I am a son. That’s the work. The rest is just cleanup.
