Kanye West is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He debuted with the studio album The College Dropout in 2004. In 2019, he released the album Jesus Is King, which he described as an expression of the gospel. That same year, he formed the gospel group Sunday Service Choir.
Jesus Is King topped the Billboard Top Christian Albums and Top Gospel Albums charts. The album includes the songs “Follow God,” “Closed on Sunday,” “Water,” and “Selah.” West also released Jesus Is Born with the Sunday Service Choir, furthering his exploration of gospel music. An earlier song in his catalog, “Jesus Walks,” also reflected Christian themes.
At the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021, Jesus Is King won Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. It also won Top Christian Album and Top Gospel Album at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards. West has publicly stated his faith and his intent to create music with Christian themes.
