Lyrics
You know Lord
Whether I'm right
You know Lord
Whether I'm wrong
You know Lord
Whether I'm right or wrong
Whether I'm right or wrong
(Altos) While I'm down her praying
Lord, search my heart
(Sopranos) While I'm down her praying
Lord, search my heart
(Tenors) While I'm down her praying
Lord, search my heart
You know Lord
Whether I'm right
You know Lord
Whether I'm wrong
You know Lord
Whether I'm right or wrong
Whether I'm right or wrong
We're your children Lord
And we need your protection
Guide us in your way
So we won't stray
You know Lord
Whether I'm right
You know Lord
Whether I'm wrong
You know Lord
Whether I'm right or wrong
We're your children Lord
And we need your protection
Guide us in your way
So we won't stray

Meaning & Inspiration
Search Me Lord is a prayer of confession, guidance, and dependence on God. The repeated contrast between being right and being wrong acknowledges that God sees the condition of the heart more clearly than any human judgment can. As the choir parts enter, the request becomes especially personal: while praying, each voice asks the Lord to search the heart. Repetition gives that petition the character of sustained worship rather than a passing thought.
The central plea directly reflects Psalm 139:23–24, where the psalmist asks God to search, know, test, and lead. The song also identifies the singers as God’s children who need protection and guidance so that they do not stray, a theme consistent with Psalm 121:7–8. Its emphasis is not self-condemnation but openness before God. By returning again and again to the same brief prayer, the lyrics portray spiritual examination as an act of trust in the One who knows every motive and can direct a faithful path.
