Rachael Lampa + TobyMac - Perfectly Loved Lyrics
Lyrics
Verse 1: Rachael Lampa
Who said that you weren’t beautiful
And that you didn’t belong in your own skin?
Who said that you were all alone
And that you’re never gonna find love again?
Pre-Chorus 1: Rachael Lampa & TobyMac, Rachael Lampa
So many little worlds, so many little lies
That have followed you all of your life
Lookin’ for the truth, look into your eyes
And you’ll see it’s been there the whole time
Chorus: Rachael Lampa & TobyMac, Rachael Lampa
Ooh, even when you were runnin’
Even when you were hidin’
Never been a moment that you were not perfectly loved
Whеn you barely believеd it
When your eyes couldn’t see it
Every single moment, you’ve always been perfectly loved
Post-Chorus: Rachael Lampa & TobyMac
Ooh, perfectly loved
You’ve always been perfectly…
Verse 2: TobyMac
In the hands of the Infinite
As the wounds of the world became His
See the kindness Heaven has for you
And how He’s always been drawing you in
Pre-Chorus 2: Rachael Lampa, TobyMac, Rachael Lampa & TobyMac
So many open doors (So many open doors), so many miracles (So many)
That have followed you all of your life
Lookin’ for the truth (Lookin’ for the truth), look into your eyes (Oh)
And you’ll see it’s been there the whole time
Chorus: Rachael Lampa & TobyMac, Rachael Lampa
Ooh, even when you were runnin’
Even when you were hidin’
Never been a moment that you were not perfectly loved
When you barely believed it
When your eyes couldn’t see it
Every single moment, you’ve always been perfectly loved
Post-Chorus: Rachael Lampa & TobyMac
Ooh, perfectly loved, ooh-ooh
Bridge: Rachael Lampa, TobyMac, Rachael Lampa & TobyMac
You’re not a problem, you’re not a mistake
Don’t need fixin’ to solve it in the arms of His grace
You’re perfectly human, made from the dust
You’ve got a heart, broken and scarred, yet perfectly loved, oh-oh
Chorus: Rachael Lampa & TobyMac, Rachael Lampa
Even when you were runnin’
Even when you were hidin’ (Oh-oh)
Never been a moment that you were not perfectly loved
When you barely believed it (When you barely believed it)
When your eyes couldn’t see it
Every single moment, you’ve always been perfectly loved
Post-Chorus: Rachael Lampa & TobyMac, Rachael Lampa
Perfectly loved
You’ve always been perfectly loved, ooh-ooh
Perfectly loved
You’ve always been perfectly loved

Meaning & Inspiration
Rachael Lampa and TobyMac’s "Perfectly Loved" hits the airwaves with a polish that makes it feel like it’s being played through a speaker in a sterile, white-walled café. It’s light, it’s rhythmic, and it’s undeniably "safe." But when you pull back the glossy production, you’re left with a claim that carries an immense, terrifying weight: "Never been a moment that you were not perfectly loved."
I’m standing in the back of the room, arms crossed, thinking about the last time I sat in a silent house after a funeral. Or the time the pink slip hit the desk and the mortgage became a monster. In those rooms, "perfectly loved" feels like a greeting card left on a gravestone. It’s a nice sentiment, but does it pay the rent? Does it stop the grief from rattling the floorboards at 3:00 AM? If God’s love is a constant hum in the background, why is the noise of our suffering so deafeningly loud?
The lyrics lean into a comforting paradox: "You’ve got a heart, broken and scarred, yet perfectly loved." It’s the kind of line that risks being cheap grace if we don't hold it up against the actual grit of the text. The Bible tells us that we were enemies of God while Christ died for us (Romans 5:10). That isn't a warm, fuzzy feeling. That’s a radical, intrusive intervention. If we are loved while we are "runnin’" and "hidin’," it implies that this love isn't something we earn, but it also implies that this love is something that exists despite our best efforts to self-destruct.
The problem with songs like this is that they make "believing" sound like a simple shift in perspective—"look into your eyes and you’ll see it." But having your eyes opened to love isn't a lightbulb moment for everyone. For some, it’s a slow, agonizing crawl out of a pit. To tell someone who is currently in the dirt that they are "perfectly loved" can feel like a taunt if they aren't feeling anything but cold stone.
Yet, there is a glimmer of honesty in the bridge: "You’re perfectly human, made from the dust." That keeps it from floating off into total abstraction. Dust doesn't have grand plans. Dust doesn't pretend to be sturdy. If we are made of dust, we are meant to be scattered, to be weathered, and to eventually settle. Being loved in that state—the state of being fragile, prone to cracking, and ultimately finite—is a different kind of theology than the kind that promises to "fix" your life.
Maybe the song is trying to suggest that being loved isn't about being made comfortable, but about being held while you are falling apart. I’m still not sure if the radio-ready chorus does that justice, but the idea that we are loved while we are still "runnin'"? That’s something I can chew on. It suggests a love that is more persistent than my own ability to stay lost. I don't know if that settles the silence in the house, but it’s a better starting point than a pat on the back.
