I’m still on the road with this truth, not at the destination yet—but I see the direction more clearly now.

They keep saying "never going back" like a man who just burned his own boat on a dark beach. It’s a strange promise to make when your feet are still covered in the mud from the last time you ran away. People hear the shouting and the singing but they miss the guy standing there wiping his hands clean of the old ash. Why do we act like the change is finished just because we said the word out loud? It sounds like someone trying to convince themselves while the wind is still howling. I keep looking at that silence between the words where the fear usually hides.

The rescue feels like a debt I keep trying to pay off with a song that isn't worth the paper it’s written on.
