Meaning & Inspiration
Fungua Macho is a Swahili song that calls believers to open their eyes to God's protection. The verses address the chosen who have put their faith in the one who died for them, noting that doubt says they will not stand or go on, but they answer that they will stand and continue because God is on their side. The chorus tells the Christian to stand and open the eyes to see the army of angels surrounding them, so the battle will be won.
The ending prays that eyes be opened to see more. The picture of angels comes from 2 Kings 6:15-17, where Elisha prays that his servant's eyes be opened to see the horses and chariots of fire, and Psalm 34:7 on the angel of the Lord encamping around those who fear Him. Romans 8:31 on God being for believers and Ephesians 1:18 on enlightened eyes also fit. The repeated refrain makes the song an encouraging call to courage.
