Lyrics
Verse 1
I need you like the air that is in my lungs
That sustains my life
I need you like a deer, pants for the water
In a land that's dry
There's a hunger in my soul
And in my heart, I know
Chorus
If you only ate on Sundays
You would starve down to your bones (Ooh)
If you drove your car on empty
You'd never make it home (Ah)
I don't wanna live a stagnant, lukewarm faith
When I gotta give my heart with no restraints
My soul would waste away
If I only ate on Sundays
Verse 2
I was walking on the line
This world in the divine
But now I'm going in
I'm done standing on the side
You gave me all Your life
Now I will give you mine
There's a hunger in my soul
Oh, I need You more and more (Ah)
Chorus (Repeat)
I don't want to live a stagnant, lukewarm faith (Ooh)
When I gotta give my heart with no restraints
My soul would waste away
If I only ate on Sundays
Bridge
That would be a waste
I don't want my soul to starve away
Oh, Lord
There's a hunger in my soul
And in my heart, I know
Chorus (Repeat)
That if you only ate on Sundays
You would starve down to your bones
If you drove your car on empty
You'd never make it home
I don't want to live a stagnant, lukewarm faith (Ooh)
When I gotta give my heart with no restraints
My soul would waste away
If I only ate on Sundays

Meaning & Inspiration
“Sundays” by Josiah Queen is a song about a faith that is lived all week. The opening says, “I need You like the air that is in my lungs,” and “like a deer pants for the water in a land that’s dry.” The second image is close to Psalm 42:1, which compares longing for God to a deer panting for streams.
The chorus is the central picture: “If you only ate on Sundays, you would starve down to your bones.” It continues with the comparison to driving a car on empty. The singer says he does not want a stagnant, lukewarm faith, which recalls Revelation 3:16, and that his soul would waste away if he only ate on Sundays.
The bridge says he was walking on the line but is now going in, giving his life because God gave His. The song urges daily devotion over a once-a-week routine.
