Meaning & Inspiration
“This Year” by Joe Mettle is a declaration song for a new year. The chorus says the year will be full of testimonies, with signs and wonders all around and abundance, and ends with the words “I decree and I declare this over my life.” The verse adds that the singer woke up with a fire in his spirit, expecting doors to open and every valley to turn into a highway.
The bridge is a prayer of receiving. It lists the house, the mind, the going out and coming in, the hands and the plans, and says, “I agree with heaven, let it be as You have said it.” The ending repeats “I receive” for every word and blessing from the Lord.
The lines are close to Psalm 121:8, Isaiah 40:4 and Luke 1:38, on the Lord keeping going out and coming in, valleys being raised, and accepting God’s word with the response, “let it be.” The song is bold and hopeful, and it is made for a congregation to say together at the start of the year.
