Meaning & Inspiration

“Oh Magnify” by James Wilson is a worship song that moves from declaring who God is to calling for praise. It opens with “Holy, holy, is he, Lord of lords and King of kings, full of mercy and grace and just in all his ways,” followed by words close to Psalm 113:3 about the rising of the sun to its going down. The chorus invites everyone to magnify the Lord, kneel in his presence, and exalt his name together, language close to Psalm 34:3.

The second verse adds testimony: the Lord is mighty, broke the singer’s chains, and set him free. The bridge makes a vow of daily praise, saying “I’m not gonna let a rock cry out for me,” which recalls Jesus’ words in Luke 19:40 that if the people were silent, the stones would cry out.

The ending calls on the redeemed of the Lord to say so, echoing Psalm 107:2.
