Meaning & Inspiration

When Israel & New Breed start singing about una mirada de fe—that one look of faith—it doesn’t feel like a lecture. It feels like a lifeline thrown into a gutter.

I’ve spent a lot of time out there, running from the only thing that could actually fix me. You reach a point where you’re so covered in the filth of the places you’ve been that you don’t even remember what clean feels like. The smell of the pig pen doesn't just sit on your clothes; it gets into your pores. And when you’re that far gone, the idea of doing "good works" to get back to God is a joke. I didn’t have any works left. I was empty, broke, and exhausted.

Then there’s that line: “Una mirada de fe, es la que puede salvar al pecador.”

It’s just a look. It’s not a grand declaration. It’s not me cleaning myself up first, or promising I’ll be better if He just gives me a chance. It’s just turning my head. It’s the moment the thief on the cross turned his head toward the Man dying next to him (Luke 23:42). He didn’t have time to go to church, or pay tithes, or get his act together. He just had enough breath to look, to recognize that the One hanging there was royalty, and to whisper, "Remember me."

That’s all it takes? That feels… scandalous. It feels unfair to the guys who spent their whole lives trying to earn their way in, but for me, it’s the only thing that kept me from ending it all.

I listen to this, and I still feel the grit in my teeth. I know the habits I’m still fighting, and I know how easy it is for me to turn back toward the shadows. But the song says it’s not with a sword, and it’s not with an army—it’s with His Spirit (Zechariah 4:6). That part hits hard because I’ve tried to fight my demons with my own strength, with my own "swords," and I lose every single time. My armor is rusted, and my weapons are blunt. But His Spirit? That’s different. That’s the fire that burns away the trash without burning up the person holding it.

It’s messy. I don’t understand why He’d want someone like me, and half the time I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop, expecting Him to realize I’m a fraud. But then I hear that melody, and I’m reminded: He saw me when I was still a long way off. He didn’t wait for me to wash the smell off. He just saw the look, and He started running. And honestly? I’m still catching my breath from the reunion.
