Lyrics

Verse 1

Light of the world
You stepped down into darkness
Opened my eyes, let me see
Beauty that made this heart adore You
Hope of a life spent with You

Chorus

Here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You're my God
You're altogether lovely
Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me

Verse 2

King of all days, oh so highly exalted
Glorious in heaven above
Humbly You came to the earth You created
All for love's sake became poor

Chorus (Repeat)

Here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You're my God
You're altogether lovely
Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me

Bridge

I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross
I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross
I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross
I'll never know how much it cost

Chorus (x2)

Here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You're my God
You're altogether lovely
Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me

Bridge (Outro)

I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross

Meaning & Inspiration

“Here I Am to Worship” by Hillsong Worship, written by Reuben Morgan, is a worship song that begins with Christ as the light entering darkness. The first verse says he “stepped down into darkness,” opened the singer’s eyes, and became the hope of a life lived with him. The chorus answers in simple words: “Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down, here I am to say that You’re my God.”

The second verse describes the king who humbly came to earth, and says that “for love’s sake became poor.” That line is close to 2 Corinthians 8:9. The bridge turns to the cross: “I’ll never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross,” repeated as a quiet confession of how great the sacrifice was.

The light imagery recalls John 8:12, the bowing is close to Psalm 95:6, and the humility of Christ echoes Philippians 2:6-8. The song moves from adoration to gratitude.
