“This Is Just What Heaven Means to Me” is a gospel song that answers one question: what will heaven be like? Each verse offers a plain picture, beginning with “a country where no twilight shadows deepen” and “unending day where night shall never be.” Later verses describe seeing “the face of Jesus,” seeing Him crowned “Lord of all,” and a place with “no misunderstanding” and freedom from “enmity and strife.” Every verse closes with the same line, “Now this is just what Heaven means to me.”
The chorus asks, “What will it be when we get over yonder?” and imagines joining the throng upon the glassy sea, greeting loved ones, and crowning Christ forever. The sea of glass and the crowning of Christ recall Revelation 4:6 and 4:10, and the absence of night is close to Revelation 22:5. The hope of seeing Jesus’ face recalls 1 John 3:2.
