B.J. Thomas (1942–2021) was an American singer whose career stretched across pop, country, and contemporary Christian music. Born Billy Joe Thomas, he began his musical journey in the 1960s as a member of the group The Triumphs. His early hits included “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” (1966), “Hooked on a Feeling” (1968), and the Oscar-winning “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” (1969). He also scored a number-one country single with “(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song” (1975).
In 1976, Thomas experienced a spiritual awakening and became a born-again Christian. That same year he released Home Where I Belong, an album that became the first Christian album to be certified platinum. Following his conversion, Thomas continued to perform his earlier popular hits while also recording and touring on the gospel circuit. He released additional gospel and country-tinged songs such as “Don’t Worry Baby” (1977) and “Whatever Happened to Old-Fashioned Love” (1983).
Thomas was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1981. Over his career, he sold more than 70 million records worldwide and won five Grammy Awards, all for religious-themed music, as well as two Dove Awards. In 2014, “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Thomas’s ability to bridge popular and sacred music made him a distinctive voice in both the mainstream and Christian music worlds.
