Meaning & Inspiration
“Okaka” by Frank Edwards is an exuberant praise song that mixes English, Nigerian Pidgin, Yoruba, and Igbo phrases. It opens with a plain confession: “Nothing can separate me from your love,” followed by “Your love is unshakeable” and “blessings are uncountable.” The singer then tries to count God’s goodness, “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,” and breaks into a repeated chant that carries the title word “Okaka.”
The bridge turns to adoration, calling God “King of kings, Lord of lords,” “the lion and the lamb,” and “lily of the valley,” and asking that His name be glorified. The singer promises to dance for Him. The closing hook, “You dey make me wonder,” says in Pidgin that God’s love leaves the singer amazed.
The opening line is close to Romans 8:38-39, and the counting of blessings recalls Psalm 40:5. The titles echo Revelation 19:16 and Song of Solomon 2:1. The song is mostly joyful repetition and celebration of an unchanging love.
