Meaning & Inspiration

I sat here this morning, the kind of morning where the joints in my fingers protest the cold, listening to Esther Oji sing about the "Chief Commander." It’s a loud song. Full of that kinetic, urgent energy that makes the younger folks want to jump until the floorboards shake. In my younger days, I’d have been right there with them, hands high, caught in the rush of the melody. But now, in the quiet after the noise fades, I find myself staring at the wall, thinking about what it actually means to call Him that.

“You no dey tire for my matter.”

That line hit me square in the chest. When you’ve lived long enough, you start to worry that you’re a burden. You wonder if God, like everyone else, eventually gets weary of the same old complaints, the same chronic aches, the same repetitive prayers about the same broken things. We like to think we’re constant, but we aren't. We wear out. We grow brittle. But to hear someone sing with such absolute, unshakable conviction that He doesn't tire of my specific, messy life? It’s a hard thing to believe when you’re staring at the clock at 3:00 AM, waiting for relief that feels a long way off.

It reminds me of that bit in Isaiah—about Him not growing faint or weary. It’s easy to read that on a clean page in a nice study Bible, but it’s a different thing to bet your life on it when your own strength has packed its bags and moved out.

Then there’s the title: Chief Commander.

There is a weight to that. I spent a good chunk of my life trying to be the commander of my own little patch of earth. I mapped out the future, drew the lines, and tried to hold the fort. Mostly, I just succeeded in wearing myself ragged. Calling Him "Captain of heaven’s army" isn't just a catchy phrase for a song; it’s an admission of surrender. It’s admitting that I was never the one in charge of the battle anyway.

Does it hold up? When the lights are dimmed and the house is silent, and I’m sitting here with nothing but the rhythm of my own heart? Some songs are just noise—they float on the adrenaline of a gathered crowd. But there’s a stubborn truth in Oji’s delivery here. She’s not just singing for the room; she’s testifying to a character that doesn't change, even if the person singing is tired.

Maybe that’s the point. I don’t always feel like celebrating, and I certainly don’t always feel like clapping. But if He really is the Chief Commander—if He really isn't tired of my matter—then perhaps I can afford to put down the burden of command and just sit here, quiet, knowing that the Captain is still on the watch. I don't know if I’ll ever have the energy to dance like they do in the video again, but I think I have enough breath left to trust that He’s still there. And for today, that feels like enough.
