Meaning & Inspiration

I was listening to Lebo Sekgobela sing this, and the part about finding rest really grabbed me. It’s simple, maybe almost too simple, but it makes me think about how Jesus tells the weary to come to Him. It hits me differently when she sings about being under His wings, too. I keep thinking of the Psalms, where David talks about hiding in the shadow of God’s wings when things get chaotic. It’s a comfort, but then I sit there and wonder if I’m just using that as a shield to hide from the hard stuff instead of actually trusting Him in the middle of it.

The title—Lion of Judah—brings up that vision in Revelation, the one who is worthy to open the scroll. It’s heavy, actually. We treat the Lion like a soft, comforting presence, but the Bible paints a much more terrifying, kingly picture of that name. She sings about Him being holy, and there’s a tension there that I don’t think we feel enough. Is He just a place for me to find rest, like a retreat, or is He the sovereign power that demands everything I am? I caught myself singing along, but then I stopped, just thinking about whether I’m actually bowing to a King or just looking for a way to feel better. There is a lot of safety in these words, but the more I think about what a lion actually does, the more I wonder if I’m really ready for the roar she’s singing about.
