Elevation Worship - Thank God I'm Free Lyrics

Lyrics

We're grateful for freedom We thank You for freedom Come on, sing it out

I'm shaking off the heaviness I'm dancing out of my regrets I'm throwing caution to the wind No, I am not ashamed to praise like this

Some would say it's foolishness But I say it's worth the risk I can't forget what Jesus did No, I am not ashamed to praise like this

Where are those chains that once held me? I'm free, I'm free I'm free, I'm free My sin is gone, how can it be? I'm free, I'm free I'm free, I'm free And look at what the Lord has done I'm never going back to the way I was I'll sing, I'll dance 'cause I believe I'm free, I'm free Thank God, I'm free (Hey)

I found a Friend that never quits No other love's as good as this And I don't care what anyone says I'll never be ashamed to praise like this

Where are those chains that once held me? I'm free, I'm free I'm free, I'm free My sin is gone, how can it be? I'm free, I'm free I'm free, I'm free Look at what the Lord has done I'm never going back to the way I was I'll sing, I'll dance 'cause I believe I'm free, I'm free Thank God, I'm free

You took the cross and You broke Your body You shed Your blood, now the sinner can sing My debt is paid and my record is clean I couldn't do it, so You did it for me You took the cross and You broke Your body You shed Your blood, now the sinner can sing My debt is paid and my record is clean I couldn't do it, so You did it for me (You took the cross) You took the cross and You broke Your body (You shed Your blood) You shed Your blood, now the sinner can sing (My debt is paid) My debt is paid and my record is clean (I couldn't do it) I couldn't do it, so You did it for me (Only God could do it) I couldn't do it, so You did it for me (Only God could do it) I couldn't do it, so You did it for me (Only God could do it, only God could do it) I couldn't do it, so You did it for me (Only God could do it, come on, sing it out)

Where are those chains that once held me? I'm free, I'm free (Come on, you sound good) I'm free, I'm free My sin is gone, how can it be? (I'm free) I'm free, I'm free I'm free, I'm free (Look at what the Lord) Look at what the Lord has done I'm never going back to the way I was (I'll sing) I'll sing, I'll dance 'cause I believe (I'm free) I'm free, I'm free Thank God, I'm free (Hey)

You took the cross and You broke Your body You shed Your blood, now the sinner can sing My debt is paid and my record is clean I couldn't do it, so You did it for me (You took the cross) You took the cross and You broke Your body (You shed Your blood) You shed Your blood, now the sinner can sing (My debt is paid) My debt is paid and my record is clean (I couldn't do it) I couldn't do it, so You did it for me (Could've only been Jesus) I couldn't do it, so You did it for me (Could've only been Jesus) I couldn't do it, so You did it for me (Only God could do it, only God could do it) I couldn't do it, so You did it for me (Only God could do it) I couldn't do it, so You did it for me

And look at what the Lord has done I'm never going back to the way I was (Yeah) Look at what the Lord has done I'm never going back to the way I was (Look at what the Lord) Look at what the Lord has done I'm never going back to the way I was (Look at what the Lord) Look at what the Lord has done I'm never going back to the way I was

Meaning & Inspiration

The room is loud, the drums are doing their work, and Elevation Rhythm and Lizzie Morgan are shouting that they are never going back to the way they were. It’s high energy. It’s the kind of track designed to make you jump until you’re breathless, where "freedom" feels like a burst of confetti. But I’m standing in the back, arms crossed, thinking about the last time I sat in a kitchen at 3:00 a.m. staring at a stack of bills that didn't care how many chains I’d supposedly shaken off.

"I couldn’t do it, so You did it for me." That’s the line that actually matters. It’s the only part of this song that doesn't feel like a greeting card.

The rest of it—the dancing out of regrets, the throwing caution to the wind—that’s the easy part. It’s fine for a Sunday morning when the lights are low and the caffeine has kicked in. But grace isn’t just a "clean record." If it were, we’d be living in some pristine, consequence-free vacuum. The reality is that the Apostle Paul, a guy who knew a thing or two about being "free," wrote in Romans 7 about a different kind of tension. He talked about the things he didn’t want to do, yet he did them anyway. He wasn’t dancing out of his regrets; he was wrestling with the weight of them.

There’s a danger here, the danger of "Cheap Grace." It’s the idea that because we sing about being free, the weight of the world just evaporates. If I’m at a funeral, or if I’ve just been handed a layoff notice, the command to "shake off the heaviness" feels less like an invitation and more like a demand to perform. If I can't just dance it away, does that mean the "Friend that never quits" has clocked out for the day?

The lyrics "I’m never going back to the way I was" sound good, but life is rarely a one-way street. We backslide. We get bitter. We get tired. We repeat the same mistakes we thought we’d left behind three years ago. Does the theology hold up when the "freedom" isn't a feeling, but a cold, hard fact you have to cling to while you’re shaking with anxiety?

Maybe the song works better if we strip away the dance floor. If you take away the "Hey!" and the clapping, you’re left with a confession of helplessness: I couldn’t do it. That’s the bridge to the cross. It’s not about how high you can jump; it’s about the fact that the work was finished by someone else.

I’m skeptical of the hype. I’m tired of the stage lights. But if there’s any truth in this, it’s not in the dancing—it’s in the admission that we are fundamentally broken, and that the only thing keeping us upright is the reality of a debt paid that we couldn't handle ourselves. The rest is just noise. The song is a blast of sunshine, but some of us are still standing in the rain, hoping the roof holds.
