Meaning & Inspiration
“Because He Is, I Am” by Dunsin Oyekan is a declaration of identity that rests on who God is. The first lines say “I know whose I am, I know whom I serve,” and the answer follows: “Because He is, I am.” The singer’s sense of self is placed entirely in God’s character and not in personal strength.
The verse adds “Praise God, I’m born of God, I overcome the world, this is the victory I have.” This is close to 1 John 5:4, which says that whatever is born of God overcomes the world, and to John 16:33, where Jesus says He has overcome the world. The name “I am” also recalls Exodus 3:14, where God reveals Himself to Moses.
The song is built almost entirely from these two short blocks and a repeated bridge, “I know, I know because He is, I am.” The repetition lets the congregation sing the statement until it becomes a settled conviction. The message is confidence, belonging, and victory that come from knowing God.
