Lyrics

Verse 1

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty
Early in the morning my song shall rise to Thee
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty
God in three persons, blessed Trinity

Verse 2

Holy, holy, holy, all the saints adore Thee
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea
All the cherubim and seraphim are falling down before Thee
Which wert and art and evermore shalt be

Verse 3

Holy, holy, holy, though the darkness hide Thee
Though the eyes of sinful man Thy glory may not see
Lord, only Thou art holy And there is none beside Thee
Perfect in power, in love and purity.

Verse 4

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty
All Thy works shall praise
Thy name in earth and sky and sea
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty
You are God in three persons, blessed Trinity
You are God in three persons, blessed Trinity
Oh, God in three persons, blessed Trinity

Meaning & Inspiration

Holy, Holy, Holy is the classic hymn that praises the holiness of the triune God, in a gospel choir arrangement. The first verse calls Him Lord God Almighty and promises that the morning song will rise to Him, merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity. The second verse pictures the saints casting golden crowns around the glassy sea while cherubim and seraphim fall down before Him, the One who was, is and will be.

The third verse says that though the darkness hides Him and sinful eyes cannot see His glory, only He is holy and none is beside Him, perfect in power, love and purity. The last verse repeats the opening praise and says that all His works shall praise His name in earth, sky and sea, ending with repeated lines about the blessed Trinity. The themes follow Isaiah 6:3, Revelation 4:8-11 and Matthew 28:19 on the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The stately melody gives the hymn a reverent, adoring tone.
