Lyrics
I'm looking for you and I'm frightened
I hear you say why are you crying
I feel you standing next to me and I am crying
I am crying, I am crying, I am looking for you
I feel the deepest part of my life is gone
I was healed, I was held and I'm holding on
When you've been forgiven of so much you love so much
When you called my name right then I knew that if had to be you
I've seen the Lord
He is alive
I've seen the Lord
He is alive
I was there when they pierced your side
I was there when the held you high
I saw you die, They took you away then you came to me
I was crying and you spoke to me you said go tell the world
I've seen the Lord
He is alive
I've seen the Lord
He is alive

Meaning & Inspiration
‘Why Are You Crying’ retells the sorrow and recognition surrounding Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb. The first lines dwell in grief and confusion as she searches for Jesus, then move toward recognition when he speaks her name. Repeated declarations that the Lord is alive turn mourning into resurrection witness. The song also remembers the crucifixion, burial, and the command to announce what has happened.
This sequence closely follows John’s Gospel, where Mary weeps outside the tomb, mistakes Jesus for the gardener, and recognizes him after hearing ‘Mary.’ Her response, ‘I have seen the Lord,’ supplies the song’s central refrain, while the instruction to tell others reflects the commission Jesus gives her in the same scene. The lyrics therefore hold grief and hope together rather than rushing past loss. Forgiveness and love appear as closely connected themes, and the resurrection becomes the decisive answer to the opening tears: the crucified Jesus is alive and makes himself known.
