Kelsy Kerubo - Mercy Lyrics

Lyrics

Verse 1

I’m living proof

Of what the mercy of God can do

If You knew me then

You’d believe me now

You turned my whole life upside down

He took the old and He made it new

That’s just what the mercy of God can do

Chorus

Now I’m alive to tell the story

How I’ve overcome

It’s His goodness and mercy

And the power of his blood

I’m so glad that my freedom

Wasn’t based on what I’ve done

But the goodness and mercy

And the power of the blood

Verse 2

Thought I deserved

To be six feet beneath the earth

For all the things I’ve done

The things I’ve said

The choices made that I regret

Oh I would still be lost

But for the mercy of God

Chorus

Now I’m alive to tell the story

How I’ve overcome

It’s His goodness and mercy

And the power of his blood

I’m so glad that my freedom

Wasn’t based on what I’ve done

But the goodness and mercy

And the power of the blood

Bridge

Was the cross meant for me

That my Savior carried

Now I’ve been made free

By the mercy of God

Was the grave meant for me

Where my sin lay buried

Now I stand redeemed

By the mercy of God

Was the cross meant for me

That my Savior carried

Now I’ve been made free

By the mercy of God

Was the grave meant for me

Where my sin lay buried

Now I stand redeemed

By the mercy of God

Chorus

Now I’m alive to tell the story

How I’ve overcome

It’s His goodness and mercy

And the power of his blood

I’m so glad that my freedom

Wasn’t based on what I’ve done

It's his goodness and mercy

And the power of the blood

It's his goodness and mercy

And the power of the blood

Goodness and mercy

And the power of the blood

Spontaneous

The power of the blood

There's power in the blood, power in the blood

You'll heal us today

Wash away, wash away

There's still power in the blood

There's still power in the blood

There's still power in the blood

There's still power in the blood

There's still power in the blood

(Wonder working power) There's still power in the blood

(Wonder working power) There's still power in the blood

(Chain breaking power) There's still power in the blood

(Chain breaking power) There's still power in the blood

(Shackle loosing power) There's still power in the blood

(I know that I know) There's still power in the blood

There's still power in the blood

There's still power in the blood

There's still power in the blood

There's still power in the blood

Hallelujah

Hallelujah

I remember

What can wash away my sins

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

What can make me whole again

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

What can wash away my sins

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

What can make me whole again

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

Meaning & Inspiration

I’ve been sitting here thinking about those lines—"my freedom wasn’t based on what I’ve done." It hits hard because it feels like the total opposite of how we usually function. Everything in life is earned, right? But then there’s the weight of saying you deserved to be "six feet beneath the earth" for the things you’ve done. It sounds heavy, maybe even a bit intense, but then I remember how Paul talked about the wages of sin being death. It doesn't sugarcoat the reality of what we’ve done or where we were headed. If I’m honest, I sometimes try to downplay my own mess, but listening to this, it feels like an admission that without something else intervening, I’m just lost.

The focus on the blood keeps pulling me back to the idea of substitution. When the song asks if the cross and the grave were meant for the singer, it’s hitting on that mystery of Jesus taking the place that was supposed to be mine. It feels solid, like it’s pulling straight from Galatians where it talks about Christ redeeming us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. But then I get a little stuck—is it just about mercy? Or is it justice too? It’s a bit jarring to sing about being "made new" and "redeemed" while acknowledging the blood, and I wonder if we spend enough time sitting in the tension of how it actually works. It’s comforting, sure, but it’s also kind of terrifying when you really stop to think about the price that was paid just so you could stand there and sing. It makes me question if I’m taking the whole "freedom" thing too lightly, like it’s just a nice feeling rather than something that cost everything.
