Lyrics

Verse 1

I've had a dollar to my name
I've had friends that walked away
And I've even lost myself a time or two
There were bridges crossed and burned
But through all the wreckage I have learned
There is one thing that I can never lose

Chorus

If I've got Jesus
I've got all that I could ever need
Take the world away from me
And I'll be ok
If I've got Jesus
There's a hope that's living deep inside
A joy that I could never hide
And a safe place to fall
If I've got Jesus
I got it all

Interlude

Mmm...

Verse 2

I've seen weakness turn to strength
I've seen failures met with grace
And it's not from what I've done, it's Christ in me
A miracle I can't explain
Oh, He's given me His name
I'm the richest man that I could ever be

Chorus (Repeat)

If I've got Jesus
I've got all that I could ever need
Take the world away from me
And I'll be ok
If I've got Jesus
There's a hope that's living deep inside
A joy that I could never hide
And a safe place to fall
If I've got Jesus
I got it all

Bridge

Oh oh
Someday that trumpet's gonna sound
And the King of heaven will ride upon the clouds, coming down
I'll hit my knees, oh Lord, then sings my soul
I'm going home

Chorus (Repeat)

If I've got Jesus
I've got all that I could ever need
Take the world away from me
And I'll be ok
If I've got Jesus
There's a hope that's living deep inside
A joy that I could never hide
And a safe place to fall
If I've got Jesus
I got it all

Outro

If I've got Jesus
I got it all
Mmm...

Meaning & Inspiration

“If I Got Jesus” by Ben Fuller is a testimony about what remains when everything else is gone. The verses recall having only a dollar, friends who walked away, and bridges crossed and burned, and the singer says he even lost himself a time or two. Through all the wreckage, he learned one thing he can never lose.

The chorus gives that answer: with Jesus he has all he could ever need, a hope living inside, a joy that cannot be hidden, and a safe place to fall. This is close to Philippians 4:19 and Psalm 73:26. The second verse credits strength and grace to Christ in him, not to his own work, which echoes Galatians 2:20 and Ephesians 2:8.

The last verse looks ahead to a trumpet sounding and the King returning on the clouds, close to 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, and the singer says he is going home. The song is humble and hopeful.
