Lyrics
Our God is an awesome God
He reigns from heaven above
With wisdom, power, and love
Our God is an awesome God
When He rolls up His sleeves
He ain't just puttin' on the rits.
Our God is an awesome God.
There is thunder in His footsteps,
And lightening in His fists.
Our God is an awesome God
The Lord wasn't jokin' when He kicked 'm out of Eden.
It wasn't for no reason that He shed His blood.
His return is very close, so you better be believin'.
Our God is an awesome God.
Now when the sky was starless
In the dead of the night
Our God is an awesome God
He spoke into the darkness
And created the light
Our God is an awesome God
Judgment and wrath he poured out on Sodom.
Mercy and grace he gave us at the cross.
Hope that we have not too quickly forgotton
That our God is an awesome God.

Meaning & Inspiration
Awesome God celebrates God’s reign, wisdom, power, and love while also recalling biblical scenes of creation, judgment, and redemption. The familiar refrain states the central confession with simplicity, and the verses expand it through images of thunder, light, and divine authority. These images present God as both the maker of the world and the Lord who acts within human history.
The lyrics also hold judgment and mercy together. Eden and Sodom evoke the seriousness of sin, while the cross becomes the place where mercy and grace are named. The reference to Christ’s return adds expectation to the song’s praise. That combination of creation, justice, the cross, and future hope gives the refrain its biblical range. The song praises God not only for might but also for wisdom, love, and the mercy shown in Christ.
