Lyrics
Verse 1
Sometimes the night was beautiful
Sometimes the sky was so far away
Sometimes it seemed to stoop so close
You could touch it but your heart would break
Sometimes the morning came too soon
Sometimes the day could be so hot
There was so much work left to do
But so much You'd already done
Chorus
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
And I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You'll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days
Verse 2
Sometimes I think of Abraham
How one star he saw had been lit for me
He was a stranger in this land
And I am that, no less than he
And on this road to righteousness
Sometimes the climb can be so steep
I may falter in my steps
But never beyond Your reach
Chorus
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You'll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days
Outro

Meaning & Inspiration
Sometimes By Step is a song of walking with God day by day. The verses recall nights that were beautiful, skies that felt far away or close enough to break the heart, mornings that came too soon and work left to do, and the reminder that so much had already been done by God. The chorus takes words from Psalm 63, "Oh God, You are my God," with the promise to seek Him in the morning and learn to walk in His ways, trusting Him to lead step by step.
The second verse thinks of Abraham, who saw a star and lived as a stranger in the land, and the singer says the same about the road to righteousness, admitting that steps may falter but never beyond His reach. The themes fit Psalm 63:1, Hebrews 11:8-16, Psalm 119:105 and Psalm 37:23-24. The long repeated ending turns the promise to follow into a quiet, meditative refrain.
