About Rich Mullins
Rich Mullins was an American contemporary Christian music singer and songwriter. Born Richard Wayne Mullins in Richmond, Indiana, in 1955, he was known for his work as a musician and for his unconventional approach to faith and life. He played piano, guitar, and hammered dulcimer, and often performed barefoot. During his career, Mullins formed a group of musicians called the Ragamuffin Band.
Mullins’s catalog includes several well-known songs and recordings. Among his most recognized songs are “Awesome God” and “Sometimes by Step” (also known as “Step by Step”), as well as “Sing Your Praise to the Lord.” His albums included Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth (1988), The World as Best as I Remember It, Vol. 1 (1991), A Liturgy, a Legacy, & a Ragamuffin Band (1993), and Brother’s Keeper (1995). Following his death, the posthumous release The Jesus Record (1998) also appeared. Three of his albums—Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth; The World as Best as I Remember It, Vol. 1; and A Liturgy, a Legacy, & a Ragamuffin Band—were ranked by CCM Magazine on their list of the 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music.
Mullins’s life reflected a commitment to simplicity and service. In 1995, he earned a B.A. in Music Education and moved to a Navajo reservation in New Mexico to teach music to children. He arranged for his music income to be channeled through a church committee, accepting only an average American salary and donating the remainder. A lifelong admirer of St. Francis of Assisi, Mullins composed a musical titled Canticle of the Plains (1997) based on his life. Mullins died in an automobile accident in Illinois at age 41. At the 29th Annual GMA Dove Awards in 1998, he was posthumously named Artist of the Year.
