Lyrics

Master, the tempest is raging
Oh, the billows are tossing high
The sky is o'ershadowed with blackness
Oh, no shelter, no shelter, nor help is nigh

Carest thou not that we perish?
Oh, how can thou lie asleep?
When it seems like each moment is so madly threatning
A grave, a grave, a grave in the angry deep

Chorus:
The wind and the waves shall obey thy will
Peace be still, peace be still
Peace be still, peace be still
Whether the wrath of the storm-tossed sea
Or demons, or men or whatever may be
No water can swallow the ship where lies
The Master of ocean and earth and skies
They all shall sweetly obey thy will
Peace, peace be still

Meaning & Inspiration

Peace Be Still presents fear at its most immediate: a violent storm, an overwhelmed boat, and the anguished question of whether the sleeping Master cares. The verses retain the dramatic language of the classic hymn, allowing danger to build before the refrain answers it. Against the wind, waves, darkness, and threat of death, Christs authority becomes the songs central assurance.

The chorus closely echoes the Gospel account in which Jesus rebukes the storm and commands the sea to be still. Its widening list of threats, including natural danger and spiritual opposition, emphasizes that nothing can finally overrule the Master of ocean, earth, and sky. Mark 4:37-39 is therefore the clearest scriptural anchor, while Psalm 107:28-29 offers a related picture of God calming a storm after distressed sailors cry out. The song does not deny terror or helplessness; it places both beneath divine command, turning a desperate plea into settled confidence in the presence and authority of Christ.
