Verse 1

We pray that your presence goes with us
O Lord God almighty please hear us
If you don’t go with us
There’s no reason leaving this place
We cannot do without you
Please go with us.

Verse 2

We are a stubborn people, please forgive us
We are so unworthy, have mercy
Please cleanse us Father and shine your face upon us
Be gracious to your people, please go with us.

Verse 3

We shall lay aside all our glories
Everything that’s so precious to us
Our hearts we now bring before you Lord
Purify us
And please go with us.

Verse 4

We pray that you would show us all of your ways
Because you have called us by your own name;
We cry out O Father
For your face and for your glory
We will face defeat without you
Please go with us.

Meaning & Inspiration

Go With Us is a prayer that asks God's presence to accompany His people. The opening lines say that there is no reason to leave the place if His presence does not go along, and that the people cannot do without Him. The second verse admits the people are stubborn and unworthy, asks forgiveness, mercy and cleansing, and asks Him to shine His face and be gracious.

The third verse lays aside glories and precious things and brings the heart before God, and the final verse recalls being called by His name and warns that defeat is certain without Him. The central plea mirrors Exodus 33:15-16, where Moses says that without God's presence there is no reason to go up, and the request for His face to shine echoes Numbers 6:25 and Psalm 67:1. The confession and humility fit 2 Chronicles 7:14. Plain and repetitive, the prayer suits corporate worship and times of commissioning.
