Meaning & Inspiration
Spirit of God is a prayer for the Holy Spirit to fall, breathe and fill a waiting congregation. The opening verses say the people are waiting, watching, hoping and anticipating, and will not move without Him. The chorus asks the Spirit of God to fall and the Breath of God to breathe, and later verses call the ground holy, say the gathering trembles in His presence and feels the wind of His presence sending them out.
The long middle section sings of His presence and power alive in the congregation and of His glory descending, calling Him a Flame of Love. The images draw on Acts 2:1-4, where wind and fire accompany the Spirit, Ezekiel 37:9 and John 20:22 on breath, and Exodus 3:5 on holy ground. Slow, repetitive and expectant, the song is built to be sung in extended waiting worship.
