Meaning & Inspiration

Lift Him Up is a short choir song that calls a congregation to praise Jesus as worthy. The opening is a call-and-response in which the sopranos begin "For He is," and the whole choir answers "Worthy, He is worthy to be praised," repeated for emphasis. The next section asks to lift Him up and lift the Savior higher, again repeated, and returns to the line that He is worthy to be praised.

The bridge describes gathering in the house to worship Him and magnify His name, and the vamp repeats the call to lift the Savior higher. The themes follow Psalm 18:3 on calling on the Lord who is worthy to be praised, John 12:32 on Jesus lifted up, and Revelation 5:12 on the Lamb being worthy. Because the wording is so brief and repeated, the song is easy to teach to a choir or congregation, and its tone is joyful, steady and focused on exalting Jesus in the service rather than on any particular story.
