About Mississippi Mass Choir
The Mississippi Mass Choir is an American gospel choir based in Jackson, Mississippi. The ensemble was founded in 1988 by Frank Williams, a member of the Jackson Southernaires and an executive at Malaco Records. David R. Curry Jr. served as the choir’s minister of music and co-founder. The choir is made up of over 100 voices selected through open auditions from across the state, and its motto and mission is “Serving God through Song.”
The group’s debut album, The Mississippi Mass Choir Live, was recorded on October 29, 1988, at Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson and released in 1989. Billboard certified the album as the Number 1 Spiritual album in the country in 1989, and it remained on the Billboard charts for 45 consecutive weeks. The debut also earned the choir two honors at the 9th annual James Cleveland GMWA Awards: Choir of the Year-Contemporary and Best New Artist of the Year-Traditional.
The Mississippi Mass Choir has released several albums over the decades, including God Gets the Glory (1991), It Remains to Be Seen... (1993), I'll See You in the Rapture (1996), Emmanuel (God With Us) (1999), Amazing Love (2002), Declaration of Dependence (2014), and We Still Believe (2024). The choir has received numerous honors over its history, including Stellar Awards and Grammy Award nominations. In 2000, the choir was inducted into the Mississippi Music Museum Hall of Fame, and in 2017, it was inducted into the Stellar Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
