Lyrics
Verse 1
When I'm low in spirit I cry Lord lift me up
I want to go higher with Thee
But the Lord Knows I can't live on a mountain
so He picked out a valley for me
Chorus
He leads me beside still waters
somewhere in the valley below
He draws me aside
to be tested and tried
but in the valley He restoreth my soul
Verse 2
It's dark as a dungeon
and the sun seldom shines
And I question Lord why must this be
Then He tells me there's strength in my sorrow
and there's victory in trials for me
Chorus (Repeat)
He lead me beside still waters
somewhere in the valley below
He draws me aside
to be tested and tried but
in the valley He restoreth my soul

Meaning & Inspiration
“He Leads Me Beside the Still Water” by Gloria Bailey is a valley song drawn from Psalm 23. The first verse opens with a plea to be lifted higher, then admits the singer cannot live on a mountain, so the Lord “picked out a valley.” The chorus joins two lines of the psalm, “He leads me beside still waters” and “He restoreth my soul,” to the idea of being drawn aside, tested, and tried.
The second verse is honest about the cost. The valley is “dark as a dungeon,” the sun seldom shines, and the singer asks why it must be. The answer given is that there is strength in sorrow and victory in trials. That thought is close to Romans 5:3-4 and 2 Corinthians 12:9, where hardship and weakness become places where God’s strength is known.
The tag repeats that in the valley, He restores the soul. The song does not deny pain; it places restoration inside the valley, not beyond it.
