Meaning & Inspiration

Abre los Cielos is a Spanish-language prayer for God to open the heavens and send His Spirit and fire. The first verse asks with all the heart to see His glory and kingdom now, and asks that He flood the worshipers' whole being and move. The pre-chorus calls on the King of majesty to do His will and send the fire, and the chorus asks Him to open the heavens, pour out His Spirit and revive the heart.

The bridge declares that mountains will tremble, the dead will live and the captive is free, here and now. The imagery of opened heavens and an outpoured Spirit recalls Isaiah 64:1, Joel 2:28 and Acts 2:17-18, while the dead living and the captive freed echo Ezekiel 37:5 and Isaiah 61:1. The wording is simple, repetitive and expectant, which makes the song easy to sing as a prayer in corporate worship.
