Meaning & Inspiration
“Who Is Like Unto Thee” by Don Moen takes its words almost directly from the Song of Moses in Exodus 15:11: “Who is like unto Thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like unto Thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?” The song adds a single “hallelujah” and repeats the whole thought three times.
The verse in Exodus follows the crossing of the Red Sea, when Israel sang about God’s rescue from Egypt. The song lifts the question out of that setting and turns it into a congregational statement of awe. Because the answer is implied, each repetition asks the singers to consider God’s holiness, the praise He deserves, and His wonders.
The lyric is brief and easy to learn, which suits corporate worship. Its tone is reverent, and the theme is close to Psalm 77:14 and Psalm 86:8, which also speak of God’s wonders and of there being none like Him. The song is a plain act of adoration.
